ST 38 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "ST 38" , 條口, is represented by "Tiaokou" in pinyin and "Ribbon Opening" in english and may be found:

8 cun below ST 35, one finger width lateral from the anterior border of the tibia.


Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Empirical point for shoulder issues - pain, motor control, adhesive capsulitis or "frozen shoulder." 
  • Local point for lower leg issues - pain, atrophy, numbness.

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. ST38, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Blood Stagnation

ST 38 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Adhesive Capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder), Leg Pain, Muscle Weakness, Parkinson's Disease (PD) and/or Shoulder Pain

While not necessarily valid clinically, KD 9 (Strong spirit disorders - anger, cursing, mania. …), LV 6 (Acute hepatitis. Pain along the channel, genital…) and SP 7 (Local point. Continued muscle atrophy in the pre…) are nearby.
