UB 33 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "UB 33" , 中髎, is represented by "Zhong Liao" in pinyin and "Central Bone Hole" in english and may be found:

On the sacrum medial and inferior to UB 32, level with the 3rd PSF.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • UB 31, UB 32, UB 33 & UB 34 together form the "Eight Liao" points and are all useful for local low back a/or sacrum problems and most genital and urinary related disorders. Of these UB 32 is most often used clinically.
  • In women may be used for irregular menstruation, light cycles, leukorrhea, infertility.
  • As an adjunctive point for constipation - but may also be used for diarrhea.

UB 33 has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

Cautions with pregnancy (PG)

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. UB33, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Kidney Qi Deficiency

UB 33 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Amenorrhea (Absence of Menstruation), Back Pain, Constipation, Diarrhea, Infertility, Irregular Menstruation and/or Leukorrhea

While not necessarily valid clinically, EX Huatuojiaji at S3 (S3 influences the external genitalia and is used …) and UB 29 (Generally a local point for back pain and/or stif…) are nearby.
