Chi Xiao Dou TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "chi xiao dou" which in english is Chi Xiao Dou herb"aduki bean", is categorized within the "herbs that drain dampness" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart and small intestine channels and exhibits neutral (ping), sour (suan) and sweet (gan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 9-30g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Clears heat, promotes urination - abdominal fullness and swelling due to edema, urinary difficulty, leg qi edema; the nature of this herb is to move downward and relieve edema by water or dampness drained from the body.
  • Disperses blood stasis - reduces swelling and fire toxicity, sores, carbuncles.
  • Clears damp heat - jaundice.

Chi Xiao Dou may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: edema, jaundice and/or urinary disorders (lin disease)
