Ji Xue Teng TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "ji xue teng" which in english is Ji Xue Teng herb"millettia vine", is categorized within the "herbs that invigorate blood" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart, liver and spleen channels and exhibits bitter (ku), sweet (gan) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 9-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Promotes the movement of blood, tonify the blood - blood deficiency patterns such as irregular menses, dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, accompanied with abdominal pain.
  • Invigorate the channels, relax the sinews - numbness of the extremities, lower back pain, knee pain, damp bi-syndrome, w/blood deficiency or stasis.

Ji Xue Teng may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: abdominal pain, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), back pain, dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain - cramps), knee pain and/or women's health

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, ji xue teng is generally included in the following 4 formulas:

ViewDan Shen Huo Xue Wan (Red Sage Root Decoction for Promoting Blood Circulation)

Weakness in the lower parts of the body from kidney yang and kidney qi deficiency - low back pain, weak back, hips, knees, leg, weak tendons.

ViewZuo Gu Shen Jing Tong Wan (Sciatica Pills)

Wind-cold-damp bi syndromes with particular issues in the lower back and legs - sciatic pain, heaviness in the lower body, hip and knee pain, arthritis in those areas (osteo or rheumatoid).
