Xian Mao TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "xian mao" which in english is "golden eye grass rhizome", is categorized within the "herbs that tonify yang" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney and liver channels and exhibits acrid and hot (re) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Tonify kidney, strengthen yang - impotence, urinary incontinence, nocturnal emission, infertility due to cold womb (woman) or cold jing (man).
  • Expel cold, eliminate damp - bi with generalized pain, pain and/or weakness in the bones and sinews, lower back and knee pain, cold abdomen.

Xian Mao has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

  • Avoid with yin deficiency, empty heat signs
  • Our clinical staff have made the following notes, regarding xian mao:

  • Generally not for longer term use.
  • The daily dose should be respected as high doses can cause limb numbness, loss of consciousness and swollen tongue among other symptoms.
