Xiong Huang TCM Herb Classifications and Usages
The TCM herb "xiong huang" which in english is "realgar", is categorized within the "herbs for external applications" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart, liver and stomach channels and exhibits acrid, bitter (ku) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.
Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:
- Dosage: 0.15-0.6g
Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:
- Relieves toxicity, kills parasites, stops itching, inflammation, abscess.
- Topically - scabies, ringworm, dam rashes.
- Kills parasites - accumulation symptoms with roundworms.
- Dries dampness, expels phlegm - wheezing, seizures, malarial conditions.
Xiong Huang has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).
- Generally, Avoid Using This Herb.
While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, xiong huang is generally included in the following 1 formula:

Resuscitates, clears heat, calms shen, and expels phelgm - coma arising from stroke, convulsions, loss of consciousness.
