Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are commonly used to treat a broad range of musculoskeletal problems. The costs of these conditions to each individuals quality of life is often high and may lead to very serious secondary issues such as drug addiction, mental health problems and more. With this study a group of researchers from the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam looked at whether or not improvements were made in subjects quality of life from acupuncture. Many studies up to this point have only looked at the effect of acupuncture on pain and not so much on indicators of the many other issues that those with chronic pain have to deal with.
Using the health related quality of life scale the researchers found significant improvements in the acupuncture group on the various measures that the scale takes into account. Compared to the non acupuncture group, those receiving acupuncture were observed to have significant changes in physical functioning, social functioning and overall vitality with significant decreases in bodily pain.
This study shows not only a positive response from acupuncture with regards to treating these types of complaints. But due to the systemic treatment (i.e. not just treating the pain) that comes naturally from the process of acupuncture treatment we can see changes across the board in people with these chronic pain cases. This is important as pain killers and muscles relaxers can only go so far as they are used within western medicine and these other quality of life issues often go neglected in the realm of treatment.
