SI 18 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "SI 18" , 顴髎, is represented by "Quan Liao" in pinyin and "Cheek Bone Hole" in english and may be found:

Directly below the outer canthus of the eye in a depression on the lower border of the zygoma.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Local point for facial disorders, Bell's palsy, trigeminal neuralgia, spasm, twitching of the eyelids, facial muscles, etc..
  • Upper jaw tootache.
  • Yellowing of the sclera.

SI 18 has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

Avoid Moxa (MX)

Si 18 has the following theoretical associations which serve as important guideposts in designing an effective treatment protocol:

  • Intersection Point of the SI & TH Meridians

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. SI18, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Lung Wind Invasion - Wind Cold and/or Lung Wind Invasion - Wind Heat

SI 18 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Bells Palsy, Facial Pain, Toothache and/or Trigeminal Neuralgia

While not necessarily valid clinically, EX Bitong (Local point for nasal issues - obstruction, conge…), LI 20 (Loss of smell or taste, nasal discharge, any nose…) and ST 3 (Local point - Twitching eyelids, pain a/or swelli…) are nearby.
