Ai Ye TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "ai ye" which in english is "mugwort leaf, moxa", is categorized within the "herbs that stop bleeding" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney, liver and spleen channels and exhibits acrid, bitter (ku) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g (char to increase warming and hemostatic properties)

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Warms the womb and stops bleeding - useful in cases of prolonged menstrual bleeding and uterine bleeding due to cold from deficiency patterns.
  • Warms the womb and pacifies the fetus - restless fetus syndrome, lower abdominal pain (menstrual), vaginal bleeding as in threatened miscarriage, infertility due to cold womb.
  • Used often asĀ moxibustion for tonification and the movement of qi stagnation.

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, ai ye is generally included in the following 1 formula:

Uterine bleeding/spotting. Abdominal/Uterine/Ovarian cramping. Irregular menstruation, history of miscarriage - due to spleen failing to regulate the blood.
