Di Fu Zi TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "di fu zi" which in english is Di Fu Zi herb"broom cyprus fruit", is categorized within the "herbs that drain dampness" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the urinary bladder channels and exhibits bitter (ku), cold (han) and sweet (gan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 6-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Clears damp heat, promotes urination - lin syndrome due to damp heat in the bladder.
  • Expels dampness, stops itching - damp skin disorders, eczema, scabies, damp-heat in the external genitals.

Di Fu Zi may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: itching, skin problems (rash) and/or urinary disorders (lin disease)

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, di fu zi is generally included in the following 1 formula:

Cystic acne, pimples. Skin irritation due to damp heat - eczema, boils, carbuncles, etc. With appropriate diagnosis can be used for acute dermatitis, poison ivy/oak.
