Liu Huang TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "liu huang" which in english is "sulphur", is categorized within the "herbs for external applications" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney and large intestine channels and exhibits hot (re) and sour (suan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 1.5-6g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Relieves toxicity, kills parasites, stops itching.
  • Used topically for scabies, ringworm, damp sores, ulcers, carbuncles.
  • Tonify ming men fire, strengthen yang - interior yin cold symptoms.
  • Kidney yang deficiency - cold lower back and knees, impotence.
  • Spleen deficiency cold - asthma, constipation (elderly plus Ban Xia.

Liu Huang has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

  • Avoid During Pregnancy.
