Qian Cao Gen TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "qian cao gen" which in english is Qian Cao Gen herb"rubia root", is categorized within the "herbs that stop bleeding" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart and liver channels and exhibits bitter (ku) and cold (han) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 6-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Cools the blood to stop bleeding - vomiting blood, nosebleed, coughing blood, blood in stool, uterine bleeding, any bleeding due to hot blood.
  • Invigorates blood to dispel blood stasis - pain associated with blood stasis, especially chest and flank pain, trauma, joint pain, early stage of carbuncles.

Qian Cao Gen may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: trauma and/or uterine bleeding
