San Qi (Tian Qi) TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "san qi (tian qi)" which in english is San Qi (Tian Qi) herb"pseudoginseng root", is categorized within the "herbs that stop bleeding" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the large intestine, liver and stomach channels and exhibits bitter (ku), sweet (gan) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g
  • Powder: 1-3g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Stops bleeding, transforms blood stasis - internal and external bleeding such as vomiting blood, nosebleed, blood in the urine or stool.
  • Can stop bleeding without causing blood stasis.
  • Traumatic injuries - alleviate pain, reduce swelling from falls, fracture, sprains.
  • Invigorates the blood - chest and abdominal pain, joint pain from blood stasis.

San Qi (Tian Qi) has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).
