Natural and Alternative Irregular Menstruation Treatment Options

Irregular Menstruation Treatment {introduction}

Women with irregular menstruation may experience heavy bleeding during their periods, infrequent or frequent menstrual periods, or spotting between periods. These characteristics can be attributed to several different underlying problems including Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea, Endometriosis, Oligomenorrhea, Premature Ovarian Failure, and Uterine Fibroids.
Amenorrhea refers to the loss or absence of a woman's menstrual cycle that is not due to pregnancy. Dysmenorrhea occurs when a woman experiences irregularly painful menstruation, characterized by extreme lower abdominal and back pain. Endometriosis occurs when tissue that normally grows inside the uterus grows outside the uterus, most commonly in the pelvic area. When menstruation occurs, these tissue growths respond the same as those inside the uterus--breaking down into blood and tissue and exiting the body. However the endometrial tissue growing outside the uterus has no place to go. This can cause heavy menstruation, severe menstrual cramping, intestinal pain, spotting or bleeding between periods, fatigue, painful urination and/or bowel movements during menstruation, and infertility.
Women with Oligomenorrhea have infrequent or occasional menstrual periods. Premature Ovarian Failure (POF) is a halt in the normal functioning of the ovaries in women under age 40. Fibroids are benign masses of muscle cells and tissue that grow in and on the uterus. These growths can cause heavy or painful menstrual periods, lower back pain, excessive urination, pain during sex, pelvic pressure or reproductive issues such as miscarriages or infertility.
Below you will find alternative and natural treatment options including those from a Chinese Medicine perspective for irregular menstruation.

TCM Diagnostic Patterns Related to Irregular Menstruation

Listed below are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic patterns that are commonly involved with this western medical condition/symptom. Properly applied, Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture and herbal medicine) treats patterns not individual symptoms/conditions which may better account for the range of symptoms often experienced by individuals. Pattern diagnosis/treatment is a crucial part of using Chinese Medicine for disease prevention instead of focusing on solely symptomatic treatments as is somewhat more common in western medicine. For more on this concept, please read What Does Acupuncture Treat? Or Treating the "Cause" and not the "Symptoms".

    Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine are often used to treat a broad range of menstrual issues.  Irregular menstruation is often overlooked as a symptom generally in western medicine circles.  From a Chinese perspective, however, it is indicative of underlying issues that are easier to resolve earlier rather than later.  The following studies illustrate some of the problems with irregular menstruation.

    Lifestyle factors play an important role in a persons health and modifications are commonly recommended by acupuncturists. In the case of irregular menstruation, Chinese Medicine considers exercise to be of great importance. As menstrual irregularities are often linked to a stagnation of Liver Qi, movement and the circulation of energy within the body will help to resolve this stagnation. With the energy of the body flowing more smoothly, the corresponding symptoms related to Qi stagnation should improve.

    From a Chinese medicine perspective irregular menstruation usually involves the Spleen, which is responsible for the production of Blood, a/or the Liver, which is responsible for the storage and smooth circulation of Blood. The Spleen is effected by emotions such as worry and upset and by lifestyle habits such as a poor diet or over or under exercising.
