Natural and Alternative Skin Problems (Rash) Treatment Options

Skin Problems (Rash) Treatment {introduction}

A rash is a form of skin irritation that appears when the body reacts to something an individual touches (contact dermatitis) or to a condition that causes skin inflammation. Irritants can include plants such as poison oak or ivy, cosmetics, certain fabrics or chemicals. A wide range of medical conditions can also cause skin inflammation including chickenpox, shingles, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and others.
Below you will find alternative and natural treatment options including those from a Chinese Medicine perspective for skin problems.

TCM Diagnostic Patterns Related to Skin Problems (Rash)

Listed below are Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnostic patterns that are commonly involved with this western medical condition/symptom. Properly applied, Chinese Medicine (including acupuncture and herbal medicine) treats patterns not individual symptoms/conditions which may better account for the range of symptoms often experienced by individuals. Pattern diagnosis/treatment is a crucial part of using Chinese Medicine for disease prevention instead of focusing on solely symptomatic treatments as is somewhat more common in western medicine. For more on this concept, please read What Does Acupuncture Treat? Or Treating the "Cause" and not the "Symptoms".

There are no tcm differential pattern diagnoses listed for this pattern at this time.

    Dermatitis and other associated skin conditions are often treated with acupuncture and/or herbal medicine with good success.  Researchers from the department of dermatology at Northwestern University in Chicago recently conducted a study evaluating a simply acupressure point to help eliminate itching (pruritus) and skin changes (lichenification) from atopic dermatitis.

    For years I had an insidious rash under my breasts. It would weep and itch. At times the skin would split and bleed. It made lifting my arms up in an exercise class so painful that I often refrained from movement even though I otherwise enjoyed it.

    Doctors hypothesized it was the result of a Candida Ablicans overgrowth. They gave me anti-fungal medications, which were palliative at best, and cortisone creams, which gave temporary relief but have nasty side effects including contributing to thinning bones.
