Thumb Pain

By Archived User | Updated: Dec 31, 2021 | Published: Dec 31, 2021

Hi,

Could you please advise on a treatment protocol for thumb pain from a Cold invasion. Pain starts from around Lu9 Li5 and extends up the thumb joints. Cold weather makes pain worse. Patient is female and 78.

Thanks

Rachael

Read the acupuncture for arthritis treatment page - particularly the fixed bi/cold bi syndrome section.

With this I often look at what tendons are involved and needle the muscles proximally (i.e. on the forearm). Also, check the palmar side of the hand for tender points. Commonly, there are points in abductor pollicis brevis (often just distal to Lu9) and in adductor pollicis. Needling and tui na are helpful. Moxa is good and herbal liniments may help also.
