Bai Qian TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "bai qian" which in english is "cynanchum rhizome", is categorized within the "herbs that transform phlegm cold" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the lung channels and exhibits acrid, sweet (gan) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g

  • Redirects lung qi down, expels phlegm - cough with copious sputum (but difficult to expectorate) and gurgling in throat, wheezing.
