Xiao Hui Xiang TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "xiao hui xiang" which in english is "fennel seed", is categorized within the "herbs that warm the interior and expel cold" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the kidney, liver, spleen and stomach channels and exhibits acrid and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Spreads liver Qi, warms the kidneys, expels cold, alleviates pain - cold hernial disorders, lower abdominal pain due to cold.
  • Regulates Qi and harmonizes the stomach - stomach cold with abdominal pain, indigestion, reduced appetite, vomiting.
