Amenorrhea since I was 14yo (absence of menstruation)

Published on 11-07-2017

"anon172093" - this is their first post.

Hello everyone,
My menstruation came when I was 13yo and was quite irregular for a year. After that I did not have menstruation anymore and on my 14yo I started going to doctors. I am now 29yo and I haven’t got my period since then, just by taking the pill. Gynaecologist and other specialists did so many test on me and they came into conclusion that they couldn’t find a reason why this happened, I don’t have Polichistic ovaries neither.
My oestrogen is low, but there seems to be no knowledge of why is low.
I can recall at that age I had a difficult time and stress for personal reasons, not sure if that was the reason behind. I was always slim but never too slim. I am 1,67cm and 64kg.
I have decided that maybe Chinese medicine can have a different approach to this. I don’t know if someone can help me to find out which kind of formula of herbs would help my situation and I am happy to answer any question required to understand more of what my body needs as a treatment. I can say I am taking Shatavari, Maca and Chaste tree.
As per my tongue w/ teethmarks, white coat maybe pale + cold limbs+ a bit of fatigue+heat on my stomach area when sleeping+pale complexion+waking up during the night+I have no problems to fall asleep+anxiety+declining libido+dry skin+irritability…

I am hoping someone can lead me to a treatment that could help me out

Thank you in advance, please feel free to ask me as many questions as you need.

Amenorrhea is generally well treated with Chinese Medicine, but you would need to see a practitioner locally. As you treat the formulas and acupuncture approaches will adapt to how your body is changing internally and treatment may required 3-9 months before you have regular cycles again.

For the most part you would likely be kidney yang and/or liver blood deficient.

Chinese medicine can almost certainly help. I’ve successfully people in a very similar situation - amenorrhea since teenage or early twenties and unsuccessful responses to western medicine. It could take anywhere from 4 months to a year or more to get your cycle started and into a regular pattern. A combination of tui na, acupuncture and herbal medicine would probably be the best course of treatment for you. I’d recommend finding a local acupuncturist to work with.

Thank you Stephen, to know more people are going through the same situation it comforts me a little bit. Now that it looks like acupuncture and also herbal medicine need to be my own treatment, do you have any tips of how to choose a good acupuncturist? Is there any kind of association that leads me to find someone that knows what is doing? I guess I might find people out there that they just want my money, and I am happy to pay but then I want this to be worth it. Many thanks in advance

If you are in the US, all practitioners are licensed in their individual states. There is a somewhat complete practitioner listing available at (our national accreditation group) and then using google for your local area. Not all acupuncturists practice herbal medicine so you want to find one that practices both and I am personally biased towards practitioners that also practice tuina (Chinese Medical Massage) - I find that they are overall higher quality practitioners, but that is an admitted bias and there are plenty of practitioners who don’t practice tuina who are fantastic.

Thank you for your fast response Chad.
I am not in the US, I am in London. Specially if my condition needs both acupuncture and herbs I find it very reasonable the practitioner needs to be knowledgeable in both areas. I did not know anything about the tuina. That is something I will have a look on.
I guess I need to find a similar listing for UK. Any idea? if not, thank you very much for your help, it’s very much appreciated.

my wife suffers from amenorrhea and we’re currently searching for cheap steroids online online and for, obviously, a good doctor that can help her with this. i’m sorry that you are going through this. please come back with updates if anything helps!

Please don’t search for “drugs online” for a completely treatable problem. If you are interested in Chinese Medicine helping your wife - consult with a practitioner in your area and receive proper treatment. Amenorrhea, as I stated earlier in this thread, is very well treated with Chinese Medicine - I’ve resolved somewhere on the order of 95% that have been seen me in my clinic and continue with treatment and diet/lifestyle modifications.

As I stated earlier, however, don’t expect quick fixes except in the rarest of cases. You will need regular treatment and, more than likely, chinese herbal medicine as well for a minimum of 3 months. Once you get a few regular cycles in a row, in most cases they stay regular after that.

I have started a treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbs. My Dr is asking me to boil and simmer this herbs for hour and a half, then drink at the evening and at the morning time. She told me the treatment will be minimum 3 months. I will definitely update you. But I am having very good feelings so far.

Hi everyone, hope you are all well.

I started to go to an acupuncturist/herbalist but I would like to have a second opinion on something I am not clear about.
Because the practitioner needs to post the herbs to my address, sometimes the herbs are delayed and that means that after taking herbs for maybe 7/10 days in a row, I stop taking them from 2 to 5 days. Is this going to affect the outcome? The practitioner reassures me that everything is fine, and herbs are building up on my system - but I don’t feel very confident about it and after paying quite a lot, I wonder if I am losing my time with this practitioner.
I’d like to know what is your opinion about it?

Thank you so much in advance.

Not knowing the herbs or what their treatment approach I can only offer general advice, and generally, I would say it wouldn’t make much difference. Depending on what they are doing it may even be more beneficial that way.

But if you uncomfortable with the expertise of your practitioner I would recommend you work with someone else. You don’t need to trust them blindly by any means, but if you don’t feel good about them it is very likely to effect the overall outcome far more than a few day delay in herbs might in my opinion. It would best for you to work with someone that you are confident in and trust.
