The easy answer is, it is very effective for IBS. The more complicated answer is that in Chinese Medicine terms IBS is a functionally irrelevant term. This is because what we really treat are your unique causes and conditions that have led to the -symptoms- of IBS. For more on this and the basics of Chinese Medicine diagnostics and approaches see “treating the cause vs. the symptoms”.
Generally speaking most acupuncturists can help tremendously with resolving IBS so long as the patient is engaged in making appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes as appropriate to the situation. In most cases treatment would take somewhere between 2-9 months, possibly with some longer term, but sporadic follow up in more extreme cases.
Our theory site has an entire section on IBS with many of the possible underlying diagnoses in Chinese Medicine terms along with some possible treatment approaches.
