Acupuncture is used to regulate a number of women's health issues including the entire range of menstrual abnormalities (cramping/dysmenorrhea, PMS, heavy periods, irregular menstruation, etc.) as well as fertility issues and other associated problems. A meta-analysis recently released from the Kyung Hee University Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea looked at a collection of studies looking at the effectiveness of acupuncture in treating menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea). The researchers looked through 27 studies which contained data from over 3000 patients and found that acupuncture was an effective modality to reduce and eliminate menstrual cramps and associated issues.
Many women feel that this is just part of being a women, but even in less severe cases it is an indicator of an imbalance from a Chinese Medicine perspective. While some mild discomfort is normal during menstruation, the amount of pain that many women deal with monthly is unnecessary and should be treated. General western medicine treatment is to use birth control, however, for many people (and for many reasons) this is undesirable. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine works to permanently resolve these issues without disrupting your hormones and to provide alleviation of symptoms without side effects.
