There are a host of Chinese Herbal Medicines that are used for male and female fertility issues.  A number of these work very well with a range of male fertility issues such as low sperm counts, motility and/or morphology issues as well as libido and other related issues.

A commonly used formula is Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan (which translates as the "five seeds which bring forth offspring").  Recently a team of researchers publishing in the "Chinese Journal of Integrated Medicine" explored how Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan functions in the body to get the effects it is known to have on sperm levels.

For their study researchers divided 25 male sprague-dawley rats into 5 groups - a control, a model, a low dose group, a medium dose group and a high dose group.  They were treated with daily doses (for low, med, high respectively .5, 1, 2 g/kb daily) overa  course of 30 days.

Now, again, they were not looking for an effect this is long understood they were looking for the possible mechanisms of how the herbal formula works.  What they found that the formula modulates the secretory proteins expression of Sergoli cells.  Sergoli cells function to provide nourishment ot the developing sperm cells through the spermatogenesis process (also known as the "mother" or "nurse" cell).

They found that the higher dose group had the strongest response.
