My 16 year old son has asthma and is presently on Amoxicillin and Advair Inhaler and Xopenex Inhaler. Is it safe for him to take Qing Qi Hua Tan Wan? Ingredients: Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Fructus Trichosanthis Cucumerinae (Gua Lou Ren), Rhizome Pinelliae Preparata (Ban Xia), Semen Armenicae Amarum (Ku Xin Ren), Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhi Shi), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chen Pi), Poria (Fu Ling), Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (Sheng Jiang). Any advice would be appreciated..

The general answer to your question is to have you take your son directly to a fully trained practitioner for a consultation. The general reason why is that the herbal formulas are for tcm diagnostic patterns primarily and -not- for symptoms - see "What Does Acupuncture Treat?" to understand this better. More importantly you don&#39t mention why you are considering using this formula - as an adjunctive to western meds? because they have failed?, etc.? Technically speaking this formula would not be contraindicated for the mix of medicines you are describing, but properly used Chinese Medicine could very likely reduce those other medicines.

If you are trying to reduce or remove his dependence on western drugs for asthma this is a great idea and one that is well handled by Chinese Medicine. It is not something, however, you can do on your own. Take your son to a practitioner in your local area and let them help you take care of him.
