SP 15 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "SP 15" , 大横, is represented by "Daheng" in pinyin and "Great Horizontal" in english and may be found:

4 cun lateral to the center of the umbilicus (CV 8) lateral to rectus abdominus.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Regulate the Qi of the Intestines - constipation, diarrhea (ST 25 better for diarrhea), abdominal pain and distention.

Sp 15 has the following theoretical associations which serve as important guideposts in designing an effective treatment protocol:

  • Intersection point of the SP & Yin Wei Meridians

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. SP15, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Large Intestine Damp Heat

SP 15 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Abdominal Pain, Constipation and/or Diarrhea

While not necessarily valid clinically, CV 8 ( Main point for extreme collapse of Yang espec…), GB 26 (GB 26, GB 27 & GB 28 are all useful points on the…), KD 16 (Cold a/or Dry effecting the lower abdomen a/or in…) and ST 25 (All intestinal issues - constipation, diarrhea, d…) are nearby.
