SP 4 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "SP 4" , 公孫, is represented by "Gongsun" in pinyin and "Yellow Emperor" in english and may be found:

In a depression distal and inferior to the base of the 1st metatarsal bone at the junction of the red and white skin.

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Excess pathologies of the ST and Intestines - severe abdominal a/or epigastric pain, dysentery, food poisoning.
  • Gynecological and Abdominal issues due to stagnation of Qi and Blood - masses, fibroids, cysts, irregular menstruation.
  • With PC 6 for chest and heart pain, shen disorders, sighing, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness.

Sp 4 has the following theoretical associations which serve as important guideposts in designing an effective treatment protocol:

A single acupuncture point is not commonly thought of as an empirical way to influence a TCM diagnostic pattern. SP4, however, is a strong candidate to be incorporated into an acupuncture protocol for patients who exhibit: Large Intestine Damp Heat, Spleen and Stomach Damp Heat and/or Stomach Dampness

SP 4 may potentially be used, in coordination with a well designed acupuncture treatment protocol, to influence the following conditions: Abdominal Pain, Anxiety, Cysts, Dysentary, Epigastric Pain, Fibroids, Food Poisoning, Insomnia, Irregular Menstruation and/or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

While not necessarily valid clinically, KD 1 (Descends excess from above, useful for LV Yang Ri…), KD 2 (Generally useful for clearing excesses & acut…), ST 42 (Issues on the upper end of the channel (i.e. mout…) and ST 43 (Similar actions to ST 44 but used less often - wi…) are nearby.
