Jin Yin Hua TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "jin yin hua" which in english is Jin Yin Hua herb"honeysuckle flower, lonicera", is categorized within the "herbs that clear heat and relieve toxicity" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the large intestine, lung and stomach channels and exhibits cold (han) and sweet (gan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 9-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Clear heat, relieve toxic fire - hot, painful swellings in the throat, breast, eyes; intestinal abscesses.
  • Expel wind-heat - fever, aversion to wind, sore throat, headache; also for summer-heat.
  • Clear damp heat from the lower jiao - dysentery, lin syndrome.
  • Stem, Ren Dong Teng, is used for similar functions - abscesses, sores, damp-heat bi syndromes.

Jin Yin Hua may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: headache, sore throat and/or urinary disorders (lin disease)

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, jin yin hua is generally included in the following 7 formulas:
