In TCM there are several different patterns that can lead to tinnitus, this formula is specific for kidney yin deficiency. In theory, the yin keeps yang in check; deficient yin can result in a relative excess of yang. Since the kidney system governs the ear, the relative excess kidney yang can rise up and basically get trapped in the ear, which results in tinnitus.
