Wa Leng Zi TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "wa leng zi" which in english is "cockle shell, ark shell", is categorized within the "herbs that invigorate blood" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the liver and spleen channels and exhibits neutral (ping), salty (xian) and sweet (gan) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 9-15g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Invigorate blood, dissolve phlegm, dissipate nodules - abdominal masses (mobile or fixed, due to blood stasis/stagnation qi/accumulation of phlegm).
  • Absorb acid, alleviate pain - chronic stomach pain, ulcer, vomiting of acid.
