Chuan Shan Jia TCM Herb Classifications and Usages

The TCM herb "chuan shan jia" which in english is "pangolin scales", is categorized within the "herbs that invigorate blood" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the liver and stomach channels and exhibits cool and salty (xian) taste/temperature properties.

Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:

  • Dosage: 3-9g

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

  • Not used commonly due to the pangolin being endangered.  Generally Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccaraie Semen), or dried seeds of cowherb Vaccaria segetalis can be used as effective supplements as can many other combinations.
  • Disperses blood stasis, unblocks menses, promotes lactation - amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, insufficient lactation due to blood stasis.
  • Reduces swellings and promotes discharge of pus - abscesses and boils (topically).
  • Expels wind-damp from the channels.

While it may not always be included depending on the manufacturer or herbalist making the formula, chuan shan jia is generally included in the following 1 formula:
