Dang Gui TCM Herb Classifications and Usages
The TCM herb "dang gui" which in english is
"chinese angelica root", is categorized within the "herbs that tonify blood" functional grouping. It is thought to enter the heart, liver and spleen channels and exhibits acrid, bitter (ku), sweet (gan) and warm (wen) taste/temperature properties.
Dosages and preparations will vary according to each individual and the overall approach of a formula, but generally this herb has the following dosage and/or preparation guidelines:
- Dosage: 3-15g
- Fry in vinegar or wine to increase blood invigorating property.
- Toast to warm channels and stop bleeding.
Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:
- Tonifies the blood, regulates menses - pallid, ashen complexion, tinnitus, blurred vision, palpitations, irregular menses, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea.
- Invigorates/harmonizes the blood, disperses cold - important herb to stop pain due to blood stasis - abdominal pain, trauma, carbuncles due to blood stasis, chronic bi.
- Moistens dry intestines due to blood deficiency.
- Reduces swellings, expels pus, generates flesh - sores.
Dang Gui may potentially be used, in coordination with a well tailored formula (in most cases), to influence the following conditions: amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain - cramps), irregular menstruation, tinnitus, vision problems and/or women's health
