CV 13 Acupuncture Point Applications and Theory

The acupuncture point "CV 13" , 上脘, is represented by "Shang Wan" in pinyin and "Upper Venter" in english and may be found:

5 cun above CV 8 (umbilicus).

Of many possible clinical applications, it may be considered to influence the following issues/symptoms:

CV 13 is useful for upper warmer issues (vomiting, hiatal hernia, hiccups, epigastric pain), whereas CV 12 is useful for middle warmer issues and CV 10 is useful for lower warmer issues.
Abdominal pain a/or distention, epigastic pain, nausea, vomiting.
Spleen deficiency related heart and emotional issues - insomnia, anxiety, palpitations, heart pain, running piglet, sensations of heat in the chest and/or body (possibly without sweating).

CV 13 has some precautions to be considered (see our precautions list).

No Perpendicular Needling (NPN) No Perpendicular Needling in Pregnancy.

Cv 13 has the following theoretical associations which serve as important guideposts in designing an effective treatment protocol:

Intersection Point of the CV, SI & ST Meridians.

While not necessarily valid clinically, KD 20 (Local point for abdominal and digestive issues. …) and ST 20 (Abdominal pain, bloating, hiccups, gastric pain, …) are nearby.
